ACT 1
Scene 1
Whatever people may say, NONHUMAN always is the main character. It can’t be otherwise. This story can’t be explained in any other way. Nonhuman is everywhere. It is possible that he is sitting everywhere right now. Next to him is 1.
NONHUMAN.
Last. Read the last comment and then never again.
1
"...in the first release it is clearly stated that people like this are damned. That is why the main character…"
NONHUMAN
Absolute lie. Deceit. Sacrilege. Read further.
1
For us it will take forever.
NONHUMAN
Read another.
1
"...I haven’t seen such nonsense. I took a look at first pages and I realized it is not for me. No consistency, you can’t relate to the characters, sometimes it seems that author was so into autobiographical details that the reader was forgotten."
NONHUMAN
They hate me.
Scene 2
SHA walks from bench to bench, sits down and stands up again. SHA is an ordinary indistinguishable girl who sometimes comes out against authorities but than goes back into her cave. IT is a human, citizen and a person, responsible against the nation.
SHA
7417029280… 300... 400. He grows before I can say the end. 500 already. How many would really sign up for that? I don't even know if someone would have told me all the terms, all the possible chances, would I have been ready to accept such an offer? Anyway, it’s suicide. Only one way is quick and the other way is… Painful.
IT
Do you love your nation?
SHA
Well, it’s a broad discussion…
IT
We want you to answer not in facts. In feelings. Precisely. Yes or no. You can love and hate your nation, it’s your choice.
SHA
My feelings are quite complicated.
IT
Why do you hate your country?
SHA
I didn’t say that.
IT
Well, you are part of us. And this new piece is a part of our nation. It is the part of nation you clearly hate.
SHA
You got me wrong.
IT
It is obvious that you don't get it. People say that it is necessary to accept chances when it comes your way, to go through the open door but they don’t say to open legs.
SHA
7417029800
IT
What?
SHA
850
IT
Absurd.
SHA
It is the number of people.
IT
But not in our country.
SHA
900
IT
You don't take it serious.
SHA
Of course I do.
IT
You don't have values.
SHA
What values?
IT
Moral values.
SHA
Moral values? What values do I have?
IT
You don't.
SHA
I have none?
IT
Well, you showed that.
SHA
Of course because if it was as you will, we would be wearing signs of moral, sowed on our epaulets, right? “I hatched four”, “I condemned eight”, “I cried for ten”, “Today I prayed three times”.
IT
In that case you would be walking naked.
SHA
Great, maybe if you also were naked, we could speak openly.
IT
(in a piteous voice)
mom, you have despicably forgotten me fragile undisputable your creation moaning trying to go through the wire fence you have built electric wall to scare me off to shake me so then I would flow with blood and it would be easier for you mom I’m here but my voice doesn’t reach you I speak human I speak nation I speak signs I speak your arteries your veins and flow but don’t reach sympathy hidden I don’t find it your instinct main to save me to hear me your child mom
SHA
He can’t speak yet.
IT
Of course he can. We hear him.
SHA
You hear many invented things.
IT snuggles to SHA’s belly, wriggles. SHA mercilessly turns from him, heartless loser.
Scene 3
I would like to stress that despite the fact that NONHUMAN was not in the last scene, he remains the main character because it is not possible to be otherwise. He resurfaces in this scene to reveal how important he is.
1
You, as a person, are not that important.
NONHUMAN
But they just understood me wrong.
1
The possibility of interpretation is one of the most fundamental features of a piece of art.
NONHUMAN
I want to explain myself. To tell what I really meant to tell.
1
IT wants to see you, you can ask him these questions without a doubt. He’s here.
NONHUMAN is very disappointed. His incredible work has went to hell. Note for the future – always sign a contract with publishers. IT stands next to NONHUMAN. 1 would like to run away but is already in too deep.
IT
I brought you some badges
NONHUMAN
Badges?
IT
I had a genius idea. Badges with Christian values written on it. I think it would be easier for people to relate to you if you would be wearing some of them.
NONHUMAN
All the time?
IT
No, only when you are dressed.
NONHUMAN
How many should I wear?
IT
As much as there is space for them.
IT put badges on NOINHUMAN like an inspired designer. One side, then the other side, legs, arms, chest. When turning, NONHUMAN is clattering with badges. He looks stunning. Audience applauses him, everyone is proud. This moment will be written in history. Written by itself because this story is also has written itself. Okay, let's go back to the action. Well, back to the main character who feels misunderstood at the moment.
NONHUMAN
I’d like to. I would like to explain myself. To tell what my intentions were. To reveal true reasons.
IT
You tell me, I will explain. Is it connected to the values?
NONHUMAN
Partly.
IT
Related to homeland?
NONHUMAN
Maybe yes
IT
Related to fight?
NONHUMAN
For what?
IT
Related to freedom?
NONHUMAN
Unless it is mine
IT
Sexual?
NONHUMAN
I wouldn't say so
IT
You should have a narrower explanation. You can reveal to me, to open your fester, pain and then I will clean it and let people to have a look.
ACT 2
Scene 1
Because in free stories, not regulated by huge corporations, word is given even to nastiest criminals so you will have to listen to a short monologue. It will take about a minute and then we will be able to hear an exclusive interview with NONHUMAN. To hear the true truth.
SHA
You are a functioning animal of the earth
Who found its cave
Head in hidden
God forbid will take your
Duties and rights to roll
In dirt to spit around
Life on pedestal
Close to illegal prostitution
Pretending to be invisibly covered
Filthy streets passed by
Police cars sometimes
Blinking lights coupons
Free of charge visit of blinking
privileges to pound one or other
Human in cavity to suck freely
From you in cocoon
curl up and cuddle so
that for a second it would be possible
to admire transition from the saint
into a function
Build your altar
Build your pedestal
Build masculine pillars
with masculine domains
I’m here just silently
without disturbing you I’ll drown myself
So that today’s story
Would more clearly unfold
Your existential dilemma.
IT
NONHUMAN would like you to take his first book as base for everything. It is the guide to universe. Dedicated for beginners. Not all interpretations by the readers are right and the author and publishers retain the rights to specify the text and explain metaphors if they wish to. If there is a need it, is going to be done. The author would like to stress that he was thinking about all of you while writing this book. This exclusive interview is finished. This is direct quote from the author. At the moment he is taking care of highest purposes and your wishes.
SHA, of course, doesn’t drown herself in this scene. Her words are the truest form of hyperbolism of problem.
IT
We would like to change your garden today.
NONHUMAN
I’m not used to water crosses. By the way, to replant everything? It seemed for me that we have planted enough.
IT
It should be an orangery. Visual metaphor.
NONHUMAN
I won't water it. I can’t relate to urbanization.
1
I apologize it took so long. It’s second act already, right? Right. We should start the scene of court.
NONHUMAN
Do we have a judge?
1
Everything is going to happen word to word by the book.
Scene 2
Scene is half in. IT quotes the book. NONHUMAN nods proud with his words, 1 listens quietly and SHA. SHA sits outrageously. Unforgivably disrespectful.
SHA
I’m sorry, maybe you could tell everyone my full name? I’d like people to remember me.
SHA interrupts court process, trying to get attention. Sadly, we are consecutive storytellers so we are not going to give in to provocations.
SHA
It would be enough for you to tell my name.
IT
Section II, article 18. Section II, article 19. Practically all section II. Section III, article 38. Section III, article 39. Almost all section III…
SHA
I’d like to interrupt.
IT
Between which section?
SHA
To comment
IT
Book has no comments
SHA
To discuss
IT
Ask the author

IT
ICON
SHA
Well, it still is just a book.
IT
You will have word.
SHA
You will announce it?
IT
If you won't use it till then. Yes, as I mentioned. This is the base of our society. This is the base of our values. It a stable base. Cemented. Non mushing. Not decaying. Repeat after me. C and O and N and S is CONS. T and I is TI. T and U is TU. T and I is TI.
SHA
I think…
IT
You will have your word
SHA
Of course
IT
O and N is ON. So let’s sentence her. Now it’s your word.
SHA
Can I?
IT
Not anymore
SHA
But my word
IT
That was two words
SHA
It’s just a saying
IT
Two words
SHA
Word
IT
So say the word
SHA
You haven’t proved my guilt.
IT
Human rights and freedoms are natural.
SHA
So, mine too.
IT
And his
SHA
He is not human yet
IT
Natural
SHA
Born with
IT
You want to prevent that.
Around 15 minutes of the court process is taken by SHA and IT’s discussion about the nature of the word “natural”. NONHUMAN decides that he needs to involve and explain what he had in mind. SHA loses the discussion and desperately disappointed fall on to bench.
SHA
Desperately? I don't fell desperate.
In this case audience has to decide to believe SHA or all knowing REMARK. As you see, SHA hushes. She takes in her loss.
IT
It’s decided
SHA
There are so many of them and there are more coming
IT
In the homeland there is one
SHA
They die or run away
IT
Alone?
1
Yes?
IT
As you see, just him alone. We should have more. More efficiency. So it is decided. You have enough time to have one more.
Scene 3
2
Impressive orangery would hide icons in the cemetery and writers in the corners, hungry for stories, boundless impression and expression creating such a charming urban picture butchered in detail change found way to correctly and neatly interpret the writing important that in the writing he moral would be clearly stated without toxic metaphors pervasive without semantics from ancient Greek “semantics” we have the word “meaningful” so that without a meaning concretely in terms used by statistics
IT
You can't lie here. And here. And here you can’t. This place is not yours. Reserved. Taken. Forbidden. Privatized. And what are you doing here?
SHA
One more, one more, one more.
IT
You were asked, what are you doing?
SHA
Giving birth
IT
You love, it seems
2
Not possible, where is it possible?
IT
Well, everywhere else. You don’t have a job?
2
Not yet
IT
So you don’t love your homeland
2
How come
IT
This is your homeland
2
Mine
IT
So work for your homeland
2
And what exactly is mine here?
IT
Homeland. State. Citizenship. Anything you wish.
2
I want
IT
A badge?
2
Politically active. Capacious and flexible. Orally talented. Morally responsible.
IT
These are with adjectives, you can have with verbs, too
SHA
Maybe enough?
IT
Are there three yet?
SHA
Do we need three?
IT
There must be three, as statistics is saying. Statistics never lie
NONHUMAN
Open your legs mother show our uncle reveal how horrible you are how nonhuman my skull wounded by rapiers and swords skeleton only left Electra Antigone Cleopatra forgive me Erigone Jocasta forgive me Polimedia forgive me, responsible author
2
Can I put my head on your knees?
IT
You shouldn’t. It’s taken.
SHA
Third
IT
Third already?
SHA
Thi - rd
IT
So soon. Let’s mark it. Let’s celebrate it.
Tragic death.
IT
Of the third one?
Drowned himself.
IT
Sacrificed himself. Who could have thought? And you were gone
We all knew.
IT
We should make a speech. Will you be ready?
ACT 3
Scene 1
1, 2, 3 millions cry for SHA. NONHUMAN gets ready to take action because he is the main character and his conscience tells him so.
3
Honestly, I didn't want to see her since I was born. My all body was against existing here. So alien, harsh. I had no place and I was just kicked and told to find some more motivation.
1
When I came out off the skirt and was able to travel by myself, I could boldly plan my future elsewhere.
2
I always feel bitterness in my mouth. Constant acid, guts flailing. You know, as if I was inside out. I should be non-human but something opposite, reverse, degenerate. Since my birth I feel as if I was carrying a leash on my neck but there was no one leading. In any direction. She, of course, never told me. She didn't look me in the eyes and didn't say she didn't want me. But can’t I feel that by myself? Legs are as if tied, I want to tear them apart and leave them here and go forward but what is your purpose here then?
NONHUMAN is ashamed, he wants to say a word. NONHUMAN says a word. Now we need that NONHUMAN would say something.
NONHUMAN
I? I don’t. Maybe I’ll go to correct the second release. Maybe there are a few mistakes there.
2
You are nothing with your badges. With your traditional and repeating, cultural and moral.
1
Everybody is cleaning up, we’ll have to wait for a few acts. By the fourth one maybe you will calm down, by the fifth you will come to terms with it and by the end maybe you will start writing yourself.
NONHUMAN leaves the stage and conflicted 1, 2 and 3. Maybe I should say a few words but I’ve got squeeze in my throat. I shouldn't say anything but we already have shown death and my job demands me to say it. Mostly me and my colleagues enjoy it in our own way. Death is an important event. Most people are attracted to news of it. Not because it would please someone. Death is a strong incentive, just that. I wish death to no one. No one, honestly. I just find it natural to express my opinion as any other character. Sometimes we are angrily silenced by louder voices, by the masses shouting and blaming us for made up things. Often I feel that I am misunderstood. The other side often speaks of one or other society but just to say that in my society and its decisions only members of that society should take part in, is a crime. To eliminate anyone who wants to join is discrimination. They are juggling the words I have never told. And I’m also not invited to join the discussion. I am not accepted in your space. What is so satanic and horrible in creating a place where I could exist?
3
She just died.
1
And space for discussion appeared.
3
She drowned herself and you make it into a philosophical discussion about how we forbid you to spread hatred?
IT
What’s with you?
3
Me?
IT
You look sick
3
Premature
IT
You are not three
3
I lacked a mother
IT
By best you are 2.78
3
Caring
IT
We will round it this time but you should fix it

There were two brothers

There were two brothers

And the third one – a fool
1
You were lucky
2
You win
1
You can go with the horses now
2
You can go and we will cry
1
We will be wise
2
But we will cry
IT drags NONHUMAN to the stage. It is time for the hero to reveal himself. To say one or two bold phrases, to inspire people, to tell about victories.
IT
No one can leave
NONHUMAN
We won
IT
What exactly did we win?
NONHUMAN
Basketball, we won in basketball

What?
NONHUMAN
I haven’t said anything, I feel responsible
IT
You shouldn't, it’s too late. Everything has been said
NONHUMAN
She drowned herself and we are also drowning
NONHUMAN is a wonderful hero and inspiration of our nation. Brought up by our soil. Fed with Lithuanian bread. Matured with Lithuanian tales. Actually, from now on we should just call him HERO.
HERO
There’s no need for that
IT
So we would have something to be proud of
HERO
Jonas. Very Lithuanian name. When I was a child I’ve been told many tales about third brother Jonas, a fool I was proud of because he would always win. He was smart. I don't remember much more from these tales. I remember Eglė. Her husband was butchered. Quite early I got ball in my hands and sometimes mom would paint tricolor flag on my cheek before I went to the basketball court. I learned the national song so that I wouldn’t shame myself in front of others. Until now I keep forgetting the third strophe. Then I pretend I have a sore throat and cough. I remember a few dates and a few important persons. That Salomėja was a traitor and that Gediminas had a dream about a wolf but that was way back. I don't feel I’m a hero like that. But when I hear the sounds of national song I crumble. Or when I watch an old patriotic film, I also come to tears.
IT
Role model
3
I was maybe eleven when I traveled in Ukraine with my parents. We were on vacation, it was summer, ten years ago. I remember a woman coming to me, probably an ice cream seller, I don’t remember exactly. I didn’t understand a word I was told, only my parents were speaking the language. I only heard my mother being angry, saying goodbye and the waving scarfed head of the old woman while my mom was dragging me away by my hand. As if taking me to perdition. Mom said that the old woman was angry I didn't speak Russian. I’ll need it, I should learn it and that’s huge. It seemed funny – what I should be learning and why my mother was angry.
IT
Insolence
3
Only later I learned to tell the language. Somehow, a few years later, I purposely chose not to study it. I wouldn't even say Hello in Russian if someone greeted me although I knew how to say it because independence.
All is fucking funny. We are discussing as if we, a small country, would really be a threat for anything. As if after so many years of captivity we should assimilate with the rest of the world and god forbid if we stand out. In my childhood I was reading all these fairy tales, these horrifying, uncensored fairy tales about Pakis, Chukchis, Jews, idiot brothers and sisters, slaughtering each other for the groom. I read them, laughed at them, memorized them and retold them. I also read about bears. Animals. Smart foxes, stupid wolves, coward rabbits, fat bears. Discriminating fairy tales? You are discussing not my Lithuania.
3
Whose then? What is your Lithuania? Let’s take a look.
We take a look.
3
The hill of Gediminas? Yours?
Mine
IT
Mine

Vilnius yours?

Ours, ours, everything is ours.

Jewish genocide in Lithuania yours?
IT
How come ours
3
People of Klaipėda, greeting Hitler with shouts and raised hands yours?
IT
How come
3
How come it is not yours if all Lithuania is yours, if you’d leave me a speck of it
Scene 2
This is pre-last scene of this play because, to be very honest, I’m tired. I’m tired to be the narrator, to push forward this story and analyze every detail of it, to fight that the viewer would understand at least a little bit what it is about and still would be misunderstood. Because I’m racist, because I’m homophobe, because I’m anti-Semitic, because I’m selfish. Because I should read more books and lighten up myself, because the wish to have a neat, unanimous nation and remain it that way is unfair, forbidden and undesirable. Because I’m old and it’s time for me to die and when I die you will brush it up. Because when I had enough keen wits to fight for it, for our independence but not enough to step aside.
3
To fight for our independence
2
Independence
3
Would I fight for it to belong only to me?
I’ll be leaving you
3
Don’t
Hero enters
HERO
Jonas
Jonas enters. Devil knows how to call you.
JONAS
Jonas.
To tell the truth, you don’t even look like a Lithuanian.
1
True, doesn’t look like one.
2
Darkish
1
With an accent
2
Polish one, it seems
Once again not ours. You can turn wherever and won’t find any. Maybe they are assimilating, half homo sapiens, half homo neanderthalensis. Half Lithuanians.
JONAS
Correction. Nation of Lithuanians…
Everything is in need of constant corrections.
JONAS
Which many ages ago established the state of Lithuania…
Hill of Gediminas needs to be corrected.
JONAS
Statute of Lithuania and Constitution of Republic of Lithuania were the legal base
Language needs to be corrected.
JONAS
For ages protecting its freedom and independence
Roads need to be corrected.
JONAS
Saved its soul, mother tongue, writ and traditions.
Education needs to be corrected.
JONAS
Embodying natural human right and right of a Nation to freely live and create in the land of their fathers and ancestors – the independent state of Lithuania
Traditions need to be corrected
JONAS
Nourishing national consensus in the land of Lithuania
Lithuanians need to be corrected
JONAS
Reaching for the open, fair, accordant civil society and the rule of law…
Constitution needs to be corrected. As if we haven't made a thing right. Phrases are wrong, trees are rooted too deep.
3
I had a friend when I was 15. He spoke Russian. And a little bit Lithuanian, with an accent. I couldn’t listen to him, cases were not matching, he was lisping and I felt the urge to correct him, to edit the sentence while he is still speaking but I was uncomfortable to do that. We stopped seeing each other. I would be writing letters, texts but after he would suggest to meet up I would disappear for a while. In distance he seemed… more Lithuanian.
IT
So?
3
It’s not my Lithuania
IT
So it's not yours
3
No, this rock is not mine, chairs are not mine, bricks not mine, old town not mine, roofs of the old town are not mine, economics of old town also is not mine. 141 seats are not mine. Curious snoots appearing on the walls of apartment building are not mine. Grouching trolleybus drivers are not mine. Language is not mine. Hymn is not mine. Euro is not mine, but litas are even more not mine. Christianity is not mine, but Perkūnas, Praamžius, Auštaras are also not mine. Thousands of emigrants are not mine. Hundreds of people coming back are not mine. Ballot paper, pensions, fucking minimal wages and its raise by a few euros are not mine. Women and men are not mine. Remarks are not mine. Writings are not mine. All this state is not mine. The child of independence knows nothing, I am told constantly. And maybe I am fucking capitalist, socialist or globalist, always shouting about everyone’s rights, freedoms and properties, but independence… independence always meant for me that a state is not a private property.
And I can’t stand this independence. For three nights I’ve been hungry standing for it, but it seems to be as distant as ever.
1
And still I haven’t come to peace with the thought that I am not going to leave Lithuania anymore.
JONAS
And I have no desire to go back to Lithuania because I am ashamed. They were able to make it from scratch but to fix it… I don't know how to fix.
2
And I keep getting angry if someone includes words from other languages, be it Russian or English, but I still get uncomfortable and ashamed when my grandma loudly speaks Samogitian in the middle of a shopping mall.
3
And I, even when I’m fighting for everyone’s rights to live were they wish, I still haven’t written to my friend that the fact that he doesn't match cases, is not making him less of a Lithuanian.
And you?
IT
And me? Me what? I’m selling, I’m just selling badges. There is a badge with Christian values. There is a badge with family values. Whatever you choose, we can correct them a bit. A badge with mythological creatures. Badges with babies, badges with hangers, a few with formulas and numbers, badges with candles, colorful badges, badges with rainbow – for both sides of the discussion. Badges with flags. With waving flags. With crossed flags. With reversed flags. With historical heroes. Badges with Lithuanian letters and with Polish letters. Some badges are changing color. Badges you can make yourself are a bit more expensive. Badges of mass production. Unitary designer made badges. Imported badges, exported badges. Vintage badges from the days of your grandma’s youth. What badges? No, no, no Soviet ones. Well, today no way. A few with Baltic sun are available but only straight to the pocket.
And how about you?
IT
Me? I am marked, with a badge. Otherwise it is hard to tell who is decent Lithuanian and who…
Scene 3
3
I’m six years old. Mom is dressing me with scarves, necklaces, bracelets from fake gold, puts a mask on my head. Wooden one. With a huge sagging nose. With dark rumpled hair. With a unibrow, wrinkled by the empty cut eye holes, my eyes should be seeing through. The mask is heavy, head is levering, but I keep on going. Mom says it is important not to brake or damage it because it is old. Grandpa made it and no one else has a one like this. It’s pouring rain, I meet my friends in the yard and we go from stairway to stairway.
1, 2, 3 knock on the door. They are stamping.
3
Ah, as luck would have it I forgot mom said not to knock.
1
We are Jews of Lithuania.
2
We want pancakes and coffee.
3
If you have no mix for pancakes.
1
Give us money from your wallets.
2
We are Gypsies of Lithuania.
3
We want pancakes and coffee.
1
If pancakes you don't have.
2
Give us litas if you can.
SHA
Good evening.
3
And as luck would have it, the mask becomes so heavy. It is going down from my head but right now I don't want to take it off. No one can see tears through the eyeholes.
SHA
Will Žemaitė to each be enough? I don't have a Jablonskis.
3
We get Žemaitė each. We go back home, the winter has been sent away, more or less. Only I feel as if it wasn’t what I’ve been sending off. Friends are jubilating and I am crying. Poor woman. I’m with a mask just for a night and it must be hard for her to be wearing it every day.
It is truly the last scene
IT
It was nice to see you. If you would like to know if you are a peasant, an esquire or a foreigner, press 1. Press 2 and you will learn if Salomėja Nėris was a traitor of the homeland. Press three and you will find out if Jonas would sing about you. Press this button and you will find out which type of Lithuanian you are. You will learn soon if you were a Lithuanian in past life. How much of you is Lithuanian? 30% if you are a citizen of Lithuania but you steal jobs from true Lithuanians. 40% if you like to sing a Lithuanian schlagers at the dinner table. 60% if all the youth is emigrating and there are 141 thieves in the country. 80% if our traditions and values are disappearing. 100%, a pure Lithuanian if there can be no other Lithuanians, only you, adulterers must be punished. Vytautas was the hero of the country, Mickevičius was a famous Lithuanian, Poles are trying to steal our history. Our traditions are stamped upon, it has never been that bad as it is now. Do you love your homeland?
1
Yes
IT
Are you ready to die for it?
3
Why?
IT
Do you think that the homeland should change?
2
Well there’s no
IT
Which of these cepelins looks most delicious to you?
1
These are quite fat
IT
Which value is most attractive to you?
2
The one on the right looks cute
IT
Who out of these people sitting here for sure are Lithuanian?
3
Any of them.
To tell the truth, JONAS is a human although sometimes we would like him to be a hero. IT would like to be master of nationality but has mastered only judging. 1, 2 and 3 are important because they are not just numbers. I am the narrator of this story. Quite subjective, one who started it’s job without knowing the characters who are independent of my words. And SHA? SHA was the only symbol in this story because it is easier that way. Because to say that we drowned her by putting cocoons in her, sucking out her life and not letting her be what she wanted to be, would be too painful. Because if she would be a human, we all would have to take responsibility and now? Now it’s just a story.
